The last of the Thanksgiving dinner is gone, the weather has turned colder, and holiday music dominates the radio. There’s no denying it, the holiday season is upon us. It’s at this point in the year, as I watch people hustle and bustle around, that I like to sit back and evaluate the importance of the season.
When you’re a child, you look forward to school vacation week and presents. When you’re a teenager, you still look forward to time off from school, maybe the presents, the endless amount of food, and hanging out with your friends. As you enter adulthood, you begin to re-evaluate things. Suddenly, the people you previously saw every year aren’t around as much. The family you sat around the table with has gone away. Then you notice the people in your community. Some have less than others, and you wonder when that happened.
As I look forward to the season ahead, I remind myself that it is my family and my community that have always been there for me. With a son of my own now, I want to remind him of the importance of the family who surround him and also that there is more to this time of year than sale prices, toys, and rushing around. Now is the time to remember those you love by spending time together, talking to each other, and just enjoying one another’s company. I also want to remind him that giving to others is a concept that can be embraced year round and not just for one week a year. We will begin by donating a toy to our Annual Toy Drive on November 30th, but it won’t end there. There are many ways to help all year~ food drives, charity walks, blood donation, and volunteering. Support your community, and it will support you.
So, as I sit here and prepare for the upcoming weeks, I want you to remember~ the friends and family who surround you are the people who know you best, love you no matter what, and will be there for you, year round, and no matter which holiday you will be celebrating this season, that is the one truth that is shared.
To all of the loyal customers of Clements’ Marketplace and the Portsmouth community, my warmest wishes for a joyous holiday season!
